All three of my children have the gene for celiac disease and one has been diagnosed as having celiac the other two are just being considered gluten intolerant at this time.  My youngest boy, 15 months, is having a really hard time with food intolerances.  He has had blood work done and testing for food allergies done twice now and had no allergies show up.  His endoscopy showed that he has eosinophilic esphagitis which is caused by allergies but nothing shows up on his allergy test.  However he is unable to drink cows milk, goat milk, soy milk, rice milk, almond milk, hemp milk, and cant eat corn and his latest reaction strawberry.  He cant drink anything but tea or water, or really diluted juice without getting diarrhea.  The pediatrician keeps telling me he will grow out of this but I am not sure.  My 3 1/2 year old girl the one that has been diagnosed with celiac has always had problems with milk and was tested 3 times before it showed up on her allergy test and it still doesnt show up as being a bad allergy however she has never been able to tolerate cows milk.  I have just bought him some of Vances Darifree to try as I have tried everything else for him and someone in support group recommended it.  I hope he is able to tolerate it I am really concerned that he is not getting enough calcium.  He has also not gained any weight in a long time although the doctors keep telling me he is fine.  I was just wondering if anyone else is having problems with the food intolerances but not true allergies?
Thanks,
Kim Wright

I'm so sorry you are having so many food issues with your children.  I do seem to be sensitive to lots of things that I just stay away from.

On the calcium issue, do you have the children on a multiple vitamin with calcium in it?  I think there are other supplements made that can be chewed but have never researched it.  I'm hoping someone with experience with children will also answer you and lead you in a right direction.  There are bits and pieces of calcium in foods, but a 15 month old (I think that is what you said) may not eat them.

I learned recently that many celiacs do not tolerate cane sugar well.  Could that be in the mix someplace?

I'll say a prayer for your guidance as you work through this very difficult issue.

I just wanted to add that the baby seems to be able to tolerate the Vances Dari-free milk alternative and hopefully he will continue to do well on it.  I do need to see about getting him on some vitamins.  My older two take a gummy vitamin that is gluten free but the baby isnt ready for them yet he only has a few of his teeth in.  Now if I could just convince my 7 year old that he needs to be on the gluten free diet, he insists he would rather take medicine to make him use the bathroom than stay on the gf diet.  He is also sneaking foods at school that are not gf, I don't know what I am going to do about him!
Thanks,

I can relate to the multiple allergies. We cannot eat any of the box "milk" products. I have realized that in our family that we have a calcium sensitivity. As crazy as it sounds, anything with calcium causes trouble. We are gluten, soy, legume, milk(calcium), corn, rice, celery, mustard, fish, shellfish, egg, sodium nitrates, sesame free. We basically eat fruit, vegies and meat. It is crazy and distressing to watch the list of okay foods diminish. We have found a route out, however. I have been seeing a woman who does NAET treatments for allergy elimination and I can now eat eggs and milk with NO problems. The kids have started too and they are showing signs of being stronger in that their reactions to food have gotten less severe. A friend of mine's sister has been able to reduce her intake of insulin through her treatments as well. The woman I work with is at Allergy and Health of Knoxville at 865-692-3456. It is a long process and costs are out of pocket. I figure the costs will be negated by reducing our grocery bill over the years plus the benefit of being able to eat food. If you want to talk to me directly I would be happy to expand on the NAET process. My email is asloank@yahoo.com
I just wanted to toss this option out there for you. If you aren't interested in NAET I can still help you with some specific food ideas.
Amy
